Diamond Reads From the cover: "We don't want to tell you what happens in this book. It is a truly special story and we don't want to spoil it. Nevertheless, you need to know enough to buy it, so we will just say this: This is the story of two women. Their lives collide one fateful day, and one of them has to make a terrible choice, the kind of choice we hope you never have to face. Two years later, they meet again--the story starts there... Once you have read it, you'll want to tell your friends about it. When you do, please don't tell them what happens. The magic is in how the story unfolds." Curious? I am!! Current mood: Does the title intrigue you? Here is a story about five generations of women. The novel opens in England during 1914 at the deathbed of Dorothy Townsend. It's an interesting time for me, personally. My biological father was born in 1919 and in fact, yesterday would have been his birthday. By the time of this story's beginnings, my grandfather had already immigrated to the states from Ireland and was busy creating his family and working to better himself. While that has nothing to do with this book, it gives you an idea of why I like reading about this timeline (well, the beginning of the book, anyway). This book brings you through the things that shape the lives of the five generations and the history they live through. If you ever read The Gardens of Kyoto, this is the same author, so you know you're in for a treat. This book releases this month from Simon and Schuster. Current mood: While this book appears to attempt a story along the lines of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code or something by James Rollins or Steve Berry, I'm not sure that I'll be reading it. I got the book free, from the kindness of Simon and Schuster, but from the descriptions I can find, it seems this one is going to have a bit of Christian fiction in it, as in will the lead character find her faith again? It comes with a recommendation from Janette Oke, a popular Christian fiction writer, and Davis Bunn, the author, has won awards for his Christian fiction. Sadly, I'm just not one to be reading something with strong christian overtones. Otherwise, the story sounds good. It's got a treasure hunt going on with historical artifacts, things like that. I like stories like that. But this other overtone to the story just kinda keeps me from reading it. Should I read it? Is it something you would read? Current mood: Here is the story of Dru Anderson: Night hunter, knife wielder, heart breaker. If you've been reading Twilight or the House of Night series and you're looking for a bit of fun, here's one for you. It's geared for readers 12 and up and one that I'll pass along to my granddaughters. They can always use more summer reading. The sequel is coming up next year, so it won't be TOO long a wait. Current mood: We've had several people calling for this one at work (I work in a book store), and when it came in paperback, I set it on the literary table. Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows look like they have a hit on their hands. I'd been wishing I could afford to just get it and was thinking of a trip to the library, so it was a total surprise to find it in the mailbox. Random House was awesome to send one to me! The letter said it was an advance copy, but it's one of the paperbacks. No matter, I'm itching to dig into this one. Right now I have Of Bees and Mist going, though, for the Barnes and Noble Book Club. It's a good thing American Idol is done with for the season. It gives me just a little more reading time. Current mood: We've been reading Stepsister Scheme by Jim C Hines for Fantasy Favorites this month and I wanted to bring it to your attention. If you haven't read it, it's well worth picking up. Do you have a daughter who loves the princesses? Do you like fantasy with a little adventure thrown in? Then here's a book for you to enjoy. Danielle has lost her husband. It looks like her stepsisters are behind it! Where could he be? I totally loved the characters in this one. I'll bet you will, too. Current mood: They were both great days for different reasons. Sunday we went to Scarborough Faire and I had the most wonderful time! Doktor Kaboom was hilarious, Don Juan and Miguel were terrific as always, and it was hilarious good fun to watch all the little ones dressed up for the day. The rain held off and since it was cloudy, the sun wasn't heating us up terribly. All in all, a perfect day. It would have been even better if the kids had been able to come, but the two of us hanging out for the day was good enough for me. We tried out the new pub, too. Cat and Fiddle was a nice indoor place, so it we ever do get stuck in the rain out there, we know where to go. I ran into Erin there, too! I haven't seen her in ages. Monday I was scheduled for four hours, and almost made that many. Kim is gone for a few days, so it was just me and Kris. Dylan was a little late letting us in, but not much. She's not used to going in that early, I think. We got the rental and new release done and then Dylan sent us home. The timing worked out, though. Harlan pulled in about the time I was trying to call him to check if I needed to pick up anything. We went for lunch and grocery shopping and checked out phones. His malfunctions often and we really need to replace it. We're thinking of changing companies if the plan is right. I'd like to find something cheaper. We hardly use the minutes we have. I was stunned watching Heroes last night! OMG!! I really need to stick in the previous seasons dvds before the next season starts. I didn't save this season on the tivo, but hopefully the new set will be for sale before long. Do you watch Heroes? Peter is my favorite. I didn't get any reading done the last few days, but hopefully today. Shanghai Girls is calling me very insistently! Current mood: I'm ready to go and Harlan is finally up and getting ready to go here: http://www.scarboroughrenfest.com ! I love going there! In the meantime, I started Shanghai Girls and positively LOVE it so far! I had a difficult time putting it down to go to sleep so I'd be up this morning. Are we there yet? Current mood: I'm SO looking forward to this one! Random House was awesome and sent me an advance copy! (I know, I'm gone from the blog forever and all of a sudden I'm active! What's up with me?) The back of this one has a description: Pearl Chin and her younger sister, May, are beautiful, modern, and living the carefree life in prewar Shanghai--until the day their father tells them that he has gambled away their wealth and that in order to repay his debts he must sell the girls as wives to suitors who have traveled from Los Angeles to find Chinese brides. As Japanese bombs fall on their beloved city, Pearl and May set out on the journey of a lifetime. In Los Angeles, they begin a fresh chapter, trying to find love with the strangers they have married and striving to embrace American life. Along the way there are terrible sacrifices, impossible choices, and one devastating, life-changing secret. Lisa See's spellbinding novel follows the fascinating lives of these sisters as they struggle to survive in a strange country while bound to the ways of the old. Readers who love Lisa See's mesmerizing command of character, setting and story will find much to cherish in the pages of Shanghai Girls. Have you read Lisa See before? What did you think? Current mood: Have you read this one? What did you think? Discussion on this one begins today at Fantasy Favorites ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FantasyFa Current mood: |
